CHAPTER 13

Still of two minds regarding the piles of clothing and shoes in her living room, she decided to let the matter go for now. On the one hand, she needed some items for the charity event. On the other hand, she hardly needed to have dozens of options from which to choose.

Just as she thought she might call Reggie out on his extravagance, she recalled the conversation of the man in the café. He was going to be earning a fifty million dollar bonus for his project. Surely, if Reggie’s employees were making that kind of money, this pile of clothing was just a drop in the bucket of the wealth at Reggie’s disposal.

Not that she did not feel slightly guilty about accepting it. She did. Picking up the designer dress with the gorgeous sparkles, she could not contain the squeal of delight at actually owning the gown. Never in her life did she expect to own anything so fancy. Now she had dozens of outfits that would be perfectly suitable to wear to any meeting or function in New York City.

Her worries on that score were over. Now, she only had to consider what Reggie might want from her in return for his generosity. It went against all of her prior experience with Pete to think that nothing would be expected of her for this kind gesture.

Having received the latest figures on the event planning, she wished she could go over them with Reggie before Monday morning. Glancing over at the clock, she realized Reggie would be fully occupied with his party guests. Shannon had filled her in on all of the details of the business gathering.

Still, she wished she had some excuse to go see Reggie. She could wear this sparkly dress. Then Reggie would see—she shook herself before finishing that thought. “I’m really losing it,” she murmured. Still holding the dress up to her, she decided to try it on anyway.

Just as she stood admiring her reflection in the full-length mirror, a knock sounded on her front door. More than a little puzzled, she wondered who could be calling at this hour. She certainly was not expecting anybody.

Slightly apprehensive, she flipped on the porch light and peeked through the side glass. Letting out a sigh of relief, she hastily opened the door and smiled at Shannon. “What’re you doing here? I don’t think we had any plans, did we?”

“Nope. But what do we have here?” Shannon asked, her tone approving of the outfit as her eyes traveled up and down her body. “That fits you like you modeled for the designer. Are you heading somewhere?”

Feeling her cheeks grow hot, she brushed her hands down her hips self-consciously. “No. It just looked so nice I thought I’d try it on.”

Grabbing her arm and hauling her away from the front door, Shannon declared, “We need to get your hair and makeup done before we head out.”

“Head out? What’re you talking about? I’m staying in for the evening.”

“Not when you look that great.
